If you are suffering from symptoms of an overactive bladder, InterStim Therapy might be the right treatment for you.
What is an Overactive Bladder?
With an overactive bladder, patients cannot control the amount or when they urinate. They also experience leaking and the frequent urge to urinate. In most cases, the symptoms of overactive bladder occur because the bladder muscles contract involuntarily, causing an urgent need to urinate. But, in some cases, the urge to urinate may simply be sensory, which means you may feel the need to urinate, although the bladder muscles are not contracting.
There are several treatment options for patients with an overactive bladder. Lifestyle changes, bladder retraining and Kegel exercises can help alleviate the symptoms. Your physician may also recommend medications, surgery or neuromodulation.
What is InterStim Therapy?
InterStim Therapy is a form of neuromodulation. InterStim is a sacral neuromodulation because it works with the sacral nerves – which are located near the tailbone. With neuromodulation, electrical pulses are sent to the nerves that control the bladder and the muscles used in urination. These pulses help the brain and the nerves to communicate properly which improves bladder function.
With InterStim Therapy, a small device is implanted to send the electrical pulses. This therapy can be stopped at any time by turning off or removing the device.
If medications and behavioral therapy have not worked for you, ask us for more information about InterStim Therapy and schedule an evaluation with your urologist.
